I would suggest to pick a hotel on I Drive. Most offer transportation to Disney and are close to shops/restaurants.
Gradenfrog,
I respectfully dissent from the previous posters.
You need to be either on Disney Property or in Lake Beuna Vista where you have access to the Disney transport system. All of the hotels have shuttles to the other parks. You may have to pay for them, but they are available. At worst, you are a short taxi ride from everything except the beach.

Hello Garden,
If you stay on Disney property you will receive free transportation to and from the airport, all Disney parks including Downtown Disney.
Froggy,
I agree with staying on the mouse%26#39;s property if you plan on spending alot of time there. give us some more info on your plans so we can elaborate.
As for staying on I-drive, there is a trolley that runs the length of i-drive. here is a link: http://www.iridetrolley.com/index.html
There are also a bunch of hotels/time share resorts in the lake buena vista area for you to choose from but remember that the disney transportation system will not take you from downtown disney (which is within walking distance of Lake Buena Vista) to any of the parks.
If you are Universal fans, then you would need to stay farther north on i-drive or maybe even at one of their hotels or the hotels across Kirkman rd from the Universal parking lot.
would love to help some more but I%26#39;ll stop rambling here.

It%26#39;s next door to a grocery store and several fast food %26amp; sit down restaurants.
Having travelled for twenty years plus without driving and having stayed at many hotels I now stay at the Doubletree at the entrance to Universal but it depends on your budget whether you wish to travel to Disney by bus or shuttle. It is definately no problem not staying on site despite what some people would have you believe.
Contact me if you need any help.
If you are spending a lot of time at Disney, the Lake Buena Vista area is the best choice,if Universal if your choice, then I Drive is better. Both are close to to many bars, restaurants and shopping and have many hotels with park transport. Staying on site at Disney is not necessary and won%26#39;t offer you much in the way of proximity to anything but...Disney!
stayed twice on I drive without a car, check the hotel reviews and pcik a good one. homewood suites has an excellent reputation!
We have never had a car before and always stayed on International Drive. We particularly like the Holiday Inn as it is central. We use the I-ride trolley which runs the length of I Drive to get to Sea World, outlet shopping malls and restaurants. We have walked to Universal and Islands of adventure (quite a long walk but lovely first thing in the morning when you are up early because of jet lag and the parks aren%26#39;t open yet!). If using cabs to get to disney I suggest getting a cab to downtown disney as it is cheaper and use the disney transportation from there to get to all the parks.
We are going again in 2 weeks time and will be staying with 2 kids on I-Drive without a car. For the first time this time we are having a 2 centre holiday so will be getting a car for the second week to get us over to Clearwater. Having never driven in USA before I%26#39;m a little nervous about that part but I%26#39;m sure we will be fine.
