Need ideas for windy days.

We keep a 30 foot boat at Tavernier Creek and have been going

to the keys for several years. We%26#39;ve done all the touristy

things like Key West, Robbies, theater of the sea, etc... Does

anyone have ideas for windy days. We go fishing in the bay but

is there any place to snorkle, islands to explore, or something

interesting to do when we can%26#39;t get on the ocean. We have

a huge respect for the area and are very careful about where

we go. We just don%26#39;t get there often enough to become

experts. Also, is there a web site for the ampitheater at Founders

Park. I can%26#39;t seem to find any information on upcoming events.

Check out Nest Key. It%26#39;s one of the few keys that you can go on to in Everglades National Park. It%26#39;s towards Key Largo from Tavernier Creek. Are you coming in summer? We like to tuck in behind Bottle Key and picnic and float. There%26#39;s really not much snorkelling but I%26#39;m happy floating on my noodles! We%26#39;ll run from the Tavernier area to Snooks for lunch.

On land, there%26#39;s a book store in Tavernier Towne center that is fun to poke around in. They have a coffee bar. There%26#39;s an ice cream shop next door.

The other new thing you%26#39;ll want to look at (windy or not!) is the new Wyland whaling wall. Here%26#39;s a link www.wylandfoundation.org/?mid=12%26sid=40

I can%26#39;t help you on the ampitheater but you may want to check out the performing arts center in the new Coral Shores High School.http://csh.monroe.k12.fl.us/pac/

Have a great trip!

Thank you, those are the ideas I%26#39;m looking for. I%26#39;m happy

just being there but when you take people with you and the

oceans too rough it%26#39;s nice to have a plan B. We usually don%26#39;t

go in the summer because Michigan only has three months of

summer and then it%26#39;s too beautiful to leave.

The Marathon Seafood Fest is this weekend. Marathon is about 30-45 minutes from you. It is open from 10-9 on Saturday, and 10-6 on Sunday. Worth the trip down. It is at about mile marker 49 on the ocean side at the Marathon Community Park.

Pigeon Key is an island off the 7 mile bride near Marathon. Once you pay to tour the island you are allowed to snorkel around the island. Many years ago (1980%26#39;s) while in college my husband worked for the Florida Dept of Natural Resources and we spent several summer vacations on Pigeon Key ( long before it was the Pigeon Key Foundation). There was lots of cool snorkeling all around the island. We have done this in recent years as a windy day alternative, we%26#39;ve even taken the boat to the island and tied up at the dock ( with permission and the added boat fee). Google Pigeon Key Foundation and see what info they have on the site. I have read recently that the executive director has left and there are problems concerning the upkeep on the old 7 mile bridge that connects the island with Vaca Key. The history of the island is fascinating and its a nice day. My kids enjoy it and its a nice alternative to being on the boat at the reef all day.
