Santa Maria Isl vs. Vero vs. Keys? Need opinions!

We Seattle-ites, a family of four (2 kids -- 7 and 2 years old), are planning a short (5 day) trip to Florida in mid-May, and we are having a hard time deciding where to go! I%26#39;d love some insight from people in-the-know. We are looking for gorgeous beaches (soft white sand, turquoise blue water), charm (NOT commercialism), great pools, wildlife, excellent eateries, and a decidedly un-divey inn experience. We love to walk, bike, swim, explore, shop (unique stores), and relax.

We%26#39;ve narrowed down our potential destinations to Santa Maria Island, Vero Beach, or the Keys. Where would you recommend, and why? Any lodging favorites in those spots?

Thanks so much for your help!

Altho Vero Beach is a nice little town there really isn%26#39;t much to do there. For the beautiful water go to the Keys, for the nice beaches with soft sand go to the west coast. Both places will have the shopping, nature areas and good food. Research the Florida Keys forum on here as there is much discussion about the beaches and things to see and do and places to stay. Many people on here recommend the Clearwater / St. Petersburg area for the west coast.

Do you mean Anna Maria Island? - I%26#39;venever heard of a ';Santa'; Maria Island- but maybe there is such a place....doesn%26#39;t ring a bell at all.

The water in the Keys is lovely for snorkling or sailing, but many of the beaches are not so nice for sunbathing- narrow strips of sand and lots of seaweed.- the seabed in Key West is rough coral and will cut your feet without shoes. The beaches are better in the Upper Keys than in Key West- but if you want ';gorgeous beaches'; I%26#39;d look elsewhere- maybe Destin, Siesta Key or Panama City...

Oh yes, I do mean Anna Maria Island! Sorry!

I hear what you%26#39;re saying about the quality of the beaches in the Keys . . . we aren%26#39;t exactly ';beach'; people -- more into pools, I guess. But we%26#39;re longing for some of that turquoise-y water! I suppose that%26#39;s why the Keys are so appealing, that and the fact that it seems like there would be a lot to explore in terms of day trips (Key West, the Everglades, Dolphin Research Ctr, etc.)
