Sanibel beach conditions 3-05-07

Well, it mostly stays good but MSC should have had a stand-in [rake-in?] for Algier%26#39;s Beach. :-) Lighthouse remains a problem child.

Thanks so much, Tourmaline, for your updates. I%26#39;ve become addicted to them lately. We%26#39;re biting our nails, hoping our Tarpon Beach trip at the end of March won%26#39;t be marred by a stinky algae covered beach. Hate to see this happen to our beloved and recently battered Sanibel, which deserves so much better! But we%26#39;re hoping for the best!

Hi Tourmaline,

We will be staying at the Holiday Inn from 4/16 to 4/20. What beach is the Holiday Inn on and does it receive this algae?

Thanks,

Greg

Holiday Inn is near Sundial, east of Algiers Beach. It was in an area that had a fairly heavy amount of seaweed early last week when I was there but mostly cleared at the end of the week and is apparently still pretty clear. It seems to be mostly at the eastern tip of Sanibel at present.

Apparently the City of Sanibel has decided to stop posting reports on beach conditions. Now usually this is a good thing as it means things are better, but I don%26#39;t know. I%26#39;ll be down in a couple of weeks and I%26#39;m planning on stopping to checkout the Holiday Inn. I%26#39;ll be sure to post my findings. Between GrandmaMac and I we%26#39;ll report all we can!

Tourmaline,

Thank you for the information and updates.

What is the algae like if you happen to swim into it?

Greg

I think it%26#39;s a little gross, but I will stand in the water that has a thin line of it. It can tangle in your fingers and hinder swimming, so it there is a broad swath of it, I would keep the kids out of it. For adults, if you can wade past it, then you can swim in clear water. I%26#39;d stay out of the water where there%26#39;s a wide swath even as an adult. It%26#39;s just not healthy.
