driving to key west

i will be staying in kissemmee for 3 week and will be driving down to key west for a few days.can anyone help me.what is the fastest way to get there and how long, and how long would it take me if i went on a more scenic route(missing out miami and going coastal road, rather than turnpike)

driving to key west

Google mapped it and it said it would take 6hrs. 23mins. not doing a scenic route... Florida%26#39;s Turnpike mostly. Don%26#39;t know how scenic the drive could be till you get into the Keys aways...anyone ? The drive through the Keys is something I think everyone should do at least once in their lifetime... it is beautiful. Key West is a lot of fun... lots to do :)

Take my advice stay the night.

They reduce speeds on the Keys roads on the way back towards Miami after dark. A tortuous never ending day.

I say that it is too far for a day trip from Orlando ...but some will say it is dead easy - not in my humble opinion.

If you take the coastal road highway 1 or 1A it will take you a lot longer.

Highway 27 and then 997 will be about the same time a bit shorter and less traffic to contend with when you get nearer Ft Lauderdale / Miami. and the 997 will bypass the Miami area altogether for you . It is the more scenic route. much more pleasant. Not so hectic to drive no tolls, Plenty of places to stop for a coffee and a leg stretch. I find it a pleasant easy drive, time has never been a concern for me. though.

I think you will find that 6 hours door to door is somewhat under estimated irrespective what Google says. Unless you like to drive like crazy everywhere you find and open stretch of road. Whichever route you pick

But Poacher would you do all that lot in a day and enjoy it all.

If you say it is an OK trip I will gladly back down on this one.

I found it bad enough driving from Miami.

PS; Correction ; Highway 27 -997 will take you about the same time as the conventional route Florida Turnpike. But less the the coastal route.

Well it is agreat drive one which we have enjoyed on many occassions the fastest route is the turnpike but will very much depend on time you travel our last journey we travelled the the first day after arrival so we where up at 04.30 and roads where clear did KW in 6hrs from Orlando previously we have done the coast road which is a nice route but you really ned a stopover to enjoy this and it is a much slower road and it is not coast all the way down And I would estimate 4-6hrs to Miami area and a further 4 to KW

Remember once passed Homestead and hitting the uper keys it is single lane traffic and if an accident occurs on any of the many bridges it can add hours

But the views are pretty special and the turquiose colours of the waters make the trip worthwhile

Once in KW if your hotel does not have parking space you may have a walk to your car but if you find a spot leave it there you do not want to drive while in KW and there is no need anyway

Definitely would not try to do it there back in on day. You would not have time to look round when you got there and the countryside would look like vegetable soup

Hi jajoab:

Even when we lived in Miami, this was never a one day deal. From Kissimmee it will take at least 6 to 8 hours, there isn%26#39;t really anything to see until you get down to the beginning of the keys, unless you want to go down A1A, but it will take about 2 days. Pretty from Cocoa Beach south through Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach.

My choice of how to do it: Leave early in the morning, take your time, plan on stopping if you want to, get a hotel for 2 nights, then leave early morning on the last day.

My reasoning: You will get to see the sunset in Key West, and the Sunrise. You will get to see what you want to do once you are down there. You won%26#39;t be exhausted from driving two whole days at one time.

Plan on spending $300 to $400 a night for the hotels...they are veyr pricey.

Hope you have fun whatever you choose to do!

Lisa

Who would contemplate doing this journey in one day !!

Madness

jajoab, said a ';few'; days...not one day :)
