Spring Break Questions

Hello all - my friend and I (H.S. seniors) and my mom are traveling to Destin over spring break - the first week of April.

I realize this isn%26#39;t an ideal spot for H.S. spring breakers - but my relatives have a place in Destin - so free lodging.

Anyways - I have a few questions you may be able to answer.

1) Because flights are much much cheaper into Pensacola for us, we are flying there and plan on renting a car to drive to Destin. My relatives said the drive from Pens. Airport to Destin is very hectic and slow-moving. They said it is not a highway drive - more of a %26#39;main road%26#39; type drive and can take 2 1/2 hours. Is this true ? According to mapquest, it is only 50 miles and should not take longer than an hour? Can anyone guesstimate the drive from Pensacola Airport to Destin for me?

2) Weather. I realize the first week of April - weather can be iffy for the pandhandle. I%26#39;ve never been to Destin or Fort Walton area but according to weather history, it should be in the mid to upper 70%26#39;s, possible 80%26#39;s. Will it be warm enough to atleast be on the beach and swim in a swimming pool?

3) Is there much for us to do (as 18 year olds) in the area or not really? Do we have to drive to Panama City for any activities our age?

I guess those are all my questions, really, but if anyone can offer any more advice it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Spring Break Questions

Drive from Pensacola airport to Destin will take anywhere from 1 hour to 2 hours depending on time of day. If it%26#39;s rush hour it can be a drag.

Weather will permit heated pool swimming and ocean swimming if you have been in Cleveland a long time. I don%26#39;t usually get in without a wetsuit until late May. Snowbirds don%26#39;t seem to mind the chilly water.

Plenty for you to do. Fudpuckers has teen nites, the Track go carts, Puttputt, there will be lots of teens on the beach around the Whales Tail and the Back Porch.

PCB will have the heavy college partying.

I agree with JoeMammy. The main activity in Destin is the beach. The activities he mentioned are pretty much all there is for teens in the evenings. The kids hang around the beach in several locations. One of them is near the Pelican. Kids also used to hang out around Jetty East. The police watch these areas very carefully. Our family spent many spring breaks in Destin. Our kids spent the day on the beach, ate dinner with us and then spent a couple of hours down on the beach. We stayed at Jetty East each year. They did play miniature golf, shop and maybe visit friends at another condo. There is really not that much going on.

As far as the weather. Mid 70%26#39;s would be alot to ask for. It will be cool at night so plan on a jacket or sweater. The water will be cold. My kids still got in, but it is to cold for most of the parents. My kids always had fun and enjoyed what Destin had to offer. By their senior year, they were ready to do other things then Destin. I hope this helps.

Here%26#39;s a reply I wrote a couple of weeks ago regarding April weather in Destin:

Hope this helps.

We too will be coming to Destin that week. We will have 2 college students and 2 seniors with us...all girls. We have been before and they LOVE it! The water was cold but they still got in. The pools were perfect if they are heated. Everyone was in swimsuits during the day and shorts/sweatshirts for the evening. If it rains, they have great malls! Have a great time!!!

Have a great trip. Since you are coming into Pensacola, you might be able to catch the Blue Angels practicing at home. Find their website and check their schedule. It is fun for all ages. My teens (one a high school senior) still enjoy going to Destin for spring break. Your local relatives can probably set you up for going out on a boat. Ask them about Crab Island. There is fantastic deep sea fishing in the area if that interests you. The outlet mall is a good place to spend time if you are tired of the beach.

Get your mom to take you to Sammy%26#39;s. It is a must see while you are there. Hog%26#39;s Breath Salooon might be fun for your agegroup or the Swamp possibly. Make sure you have proper ID%26#39;s.
