TA traveler rating vs. reviews

This has been discussed before, but I just got the TA email highlighting travel places and this caught my attention. This place has 3 reviews as far as I can tell, it was totally panned by everyone and yet it shows a rating of 2.0. Nobody rated it above 1.0, lowest possible, on cleanliness and yet it%26#39;s rated 2.0 for cleanliness.

tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g46526-d9240鈥?/a>

Makes me wonder if TA does something like give a place a minimum of all 2%26#39;s if they happen to be part of a chain...

TA traveler rating vs. reviews

Not sure - like you say this has been discussed before. My guess is that the number of %26#39;did you find this review useful%26#39; votes has some effect. Nevertheless, it does (from the reviews) seem like a place worth avoiding at all costs!

TA traveler rating vs. reviews

The possibility that occured to me is that since it only has 3 reviews, maybe TA has a floor for how low the ratings can be for properties with limited reviews, and once it gets enough reviews, they wouldn%26#39;t have that floor. If that were true in this case, the floor would obviously be a 2 out of 5 rating. Of course, if someone can show another hotel with 3 reviews and a lower than two rating, then that theory wouldn%26#39;t work.

Then there%26#39;s the possibility that user reviews aren%26#39;t the only criteria used for hotel ratings. I do know that in the case of restaurants they use other criteria. Though it has always seemed that it is largely, if not completely, from user reviews. I read something from TA about the ratings and reviews and it mentioned no other criteria for hotels; it did mention age of reviews, but that would hardly be an issue in this case.

Or it could just be a glitch.

Not only are you helpful and nice, Eddie, but sensible too. :) Sounds possible.

Thanks, Iowan. Of course, TA never has glitches, so we can rule out that possibility.

Iowan, I found another hotel, called Executive Apts/Suites, which is on South Orange Blossom Trail in Orlando. It has 12 reviews, and EVERY review ranks it 1 out of 5, yet it still is ranked 2 out of 5 overall. Based on that, I think TA may just make it so that no hotel it has gets less than 2 out of 5 overall, no matter how bad the reviews are. Or they have a glitch that makes it that way.

Out of curiosity I checked hotels in NYC and DC for low scoring hotels, figured there may be one or two there! I did find a couple rated 1.5 but they seemed to have more reviews. You were probably right about the floor until it hits a minimum number of reviews. It%26#39;d be interesting to know if any have sunk as low as a 1.0!

I totally agree. One of the worst things are those people who dress up as natives of Peru and play the pan pipes for hours on end outside Marks and Spencer every third Saturday. The lot that play near us have got a huge amp and they have introduced a bass player now. Where did they get the electricity from for this amplifier when they were 500 miles up the Andes or in the Amazon jungle.

Maybe it is because TA temper the critical report with a slightly better score to avoid outraging the hotel chain. They are in a difficult position on issues like this and they will try to keep everyone happy.

accommodations

any suggestions on a condo rental for Feb. 2008, couple in their 50s? Something that is clean, close to the beach.

Would like to rent a car, which company would be best? thanks.

Try www.vrbo.com for your condo and I find Thrifty is the lowest price car.

helmsley sandcastle

i was wondering if anyone has heard good (hopefully) or bad things about the helmsley sandcastle. my wife two kids and self will be staying there for two nights in april while we wait for our condo rental. any reviews will be appreciated.

helmsley sandcastle

We stayed there last March with our 2 kids as well. The rooms are old and need updating. However, the beach and pools are great, and the restaurant is good. Generally, a pleasant place to stay. Check out South Lido Park down the street - it is very nice, too. If you have any further questions, let me know!

helmsley sandcastle

Hi Allan55,

I work at the Sandcastle and have for going on 20 years. Most employees here have been here forever. Yes, the rooms are older because the property was built in the 1960s. But we have a great program here of ongoing renovations as needed and if for any reason you aren%26#39;t satisfied the staff will bend over backwards to ensure that you enjoy your stay. We have 2 pools, 2 restaurants, great recreation, gift shop, exercise room, pool bar, lounge and have complimentary transportation to and from St. Armands Circle.

If you would like to email me you can do so at mmcclure@helmsleyhotels.com, I would be happy to answer any questions you have. I realize I am a bit biased but if I didn%26#39;t work here this is the type of place I would want to spend my vacations!

thank-you for the information. i am glad to here that the hotel is nice .we will only be staying two nights, then off to siesta key, the last few years we have been unhappy with the choices we made. hopefully we have found a nice place for the couple of nights that we need every year. thanks again.

The Helmsley Sandcastle may be old and in need of rennovation, but the value and location cannot be beat. Walking distance to St. Armands Circle (where you will spend each evening either for drinks or dessert) and beaches is great. I%26#39;ve stayed there 5 years ago, and will go again as soon as I can get back to paradise: Sarasota.

Good comment by Mary Mac, and it rings true. We had friends stay at Helmsley last month and, while they repeated the ';dated facility'; comments of others, they also strongly echoed how terrific the staff is. For your two nights in April, it should be just fine.

i can only speak for myself but we absolutely love the helmsley we have been twice for our holiday from England it was exactly what we expected we didnt want the hilton or similar hotel but a small friendly hotel, great pools, location fab and the staff we couldln%26#39;t fault we have recommended to lots of friends who have enjoyed it as much as we have, we will be returning this september to relax following a busy year planning our daughter%26#39;s wedding 2 days previous so we will do what we have done before just RELAX!!!, the restaurant is very good and they will cook anything for you if you have specific needs, we cant fault it.

First Time Cruiser

My wife and I are both in our early 50%26#39;s and planning our 1st cruise. We would like to go with a similar age group for a 3-5 night cruise.Destination isn%26#39;t really important, but we would like to leave from the east coast of Florida.Any suggestions?

First Time Cruiser

Go to the website www.cruisecritic.com It is full of reviews of the various lines and ships and includes info about the typical age group that is usually on each ship- for instance most Holland America ships attract an older crowd and have activities/cuisine geared toward them , while the carnival ships generally have a younger crowd and try to have a more';fun ship'; party image. Reading traveler reviews of the various ships will probably help you zero in on a few that would best suit you. You can also frequently find sales advertised by sites specializing in discount cruises and if you follow the link and sign up with them they will send you countless offers via e-mail .

That%26#39;s how I would start. I guess your choices for embarkation ports wouldbe Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Port Canaveral and a few that leave from Jacksonville.

First Time Cruiser

There are cruises that leave from Miami, Port Canaveral %26amp; Fort Lauderdale, I believe.

I am taking a 7 night Western Caribbean Cruise on the Royal Caribbean Mariner of the Seas out of Port Canaveral.

Cruise Critic web site does have nice reviews of the different cruise lines, and each cruise line has elaborate web sites with tons of info. Look and see if you like the style of any things that you find on-line.

Also, this is one area that I would say a travel agent is your best bet for cruise info- there is a ton of info out there!

Take a look at the Majesty of the Seas sailing from Miami. They are 3 or 4 night cruises. The ship has just been refurbished.

or

Look at the Enchantment of the Seas 4 or 5 night cruises sailing from Ft. Lauderdale. She was recently cut in half, lengthened, and refitted.

We have cruised on both. They are both great. You will be treated like royalty and I think it is a pretty good value.

They are both Royal Carribbean Cruise line ships. You can look at their web site and book directly there.

There is a nice mix of age groups on Royal Caribbean. You will fit right in. it is a nice ,fun, upscale, non stuffy getaway.

The cruisecritic.com message boards are an excellent resource for first time cruisers.

Whats cruise ports are nearer to Disney area? Fort lauderdale, Miami or Port Canaveral? Whats the distances for all 3 - many thanks

You can also get a cruise heading out of Tampa ...

and there is actually a cruise forum here on TA :

weather in April

Planning a trip for the middle of April. What is the weather like and can I go swimming at the beach. Thinking of staying at Lido Beach resort

weather in April

If the breeze isn%26#39;t too strong, and it is sunny, it will be nice tanning weather. Once you get past the first plunge into the water you%26#39;ll be okay.

weather in April

Mid-April will definitely be warm enough for a swim, although the water willl still be chilly - probably water temp of low to mid 70s. By mid-April, the air temp will be in the 80s and if you sit in the sun for a few minutes, you%26#39;ll definitely feel like going for a swim.

Enjoy your visit!

The Lido Beach Resort is a great place to stay!

  • PNS Airport - what to expect?

Questions on what to expect when I land....

ITS MY 1st time flying to here in May,

for my trek to Panama City Beach...

Not checking bags on flights no more so I walkin right out,

Can I expect to be shuttled to car rental offsite(National)?

What kind of drive is it to get to route 98 ???

Any advise of shortcuts out of town

or websites to check the area out?

Thanks - will be landing around 6pm Seafood or steaks will do, chain restaurants (non fast food) along the way out of town toward the shore?

    THanks in advance !!!!

PNS Airport - what to expect?

It is over 2 hours driving very fast to PCB.

The on ramp to the highway is confusing. Take a left out the airport, not a right.

About 10 minutes from the airpoart went to Maggie Magees. Food was good. Drinks were better.

PNS Airport - what to expect?

Thanks Cara - didja get my reply about the NH pizza? ...

Yeah - landing on a Saturday - the one that begins the Memorial holiday weekend at about 6pm

    Last year,

Getting to Panama City Beach was really ... fun... prices are %26#39;sky high%26#39; to fly into PC airport so we landed and drove from Atlanta airport !!!... this ride was indeed long, seemed longer the closer we got.. I filled up the car when we got to Lynn Haven , it cost 33 bucks. I think we paid 2.85 a gallon

.... at times it was only a 2 lane highway in Alabama with construction in some spots to widen route 431between Dothan and Eufaula back to Phenix City .. it was nice as a one time trek , but doubtful doing that again

THIS YEAR, prices to fly to PC airport are even higher

    - SO we%26#39;re trying this Itenerary that connects from Atlanta, then driving 2+ hrs drive to PCB from PENS - should seem like CAKE compared to the 5 hours from ATL

.. but I betcha it will seem like it will take ALL night b/c I know we%26#39;re stopping at least 2 times.

..I gotta hit Cash%26#39;s discount liquors in Destin ... and of course dinner right after we land somewhere -

THANKS for the suggestion on the eatery - maybe to keep things moving we%26#39;ll do a buy-n-ride meal~ ...gotta get to that RESORT !!

    Thanks

Disney Vacation Club....Good Deal or not?

We have been contacted by Disney today regarding DVC and they are sending info out in the mail to us to review. My question is do you guys think it is a good deal, or not. We don%26#39;t know much about it except that it costs around $16,000.00 to purchase, only because they told me that in the phone conversation. Do people that are members use it more often than if they didn%26#39;t have it? We try to go every other year, occasionally 2 years in a row. I went to the DVC site, but I wanted to hear from ';real'; vacationers not a presentation.

    Thanks!!!

    Disneymom

Disney Vacation Club....Good Deal or not?

    Hi Disney Mom:

The thing about the DVC: Great if you are always going to use it every year, but you don%26#39;t really own the property and the cost of the yearly fee is much higher than other timeshares.

I found that I would like it better to just stay at a Deluxe of my choice when I wanted to go....

That is just my opinion, but the DVC might be right for you!

Have a great time no matter what you decide!

    Lisa

Disney Vacation Club....Good Deal or not?

    Lisa,

Thanks for answering so fast. I get caught up in the excitement when talking to the Disney folks and forget the most important part about it, WE WON%26#39;T EVEN OWN IT. We love Windsor Hills so it might be best if we just buy a unit there instead. About how much are the yearly fees anyway at DVC?

Its funny how I%26#39;ve seen Disney use the slogan ';Own a piece of the Magic'; in marketing for DVC when in fact you can%26#39;t own a piece of the magic; its only the right to use.

Then again, a lot of ';deeded'; ownership timeshare places give the developer the right to void a private timeshare sale if they like the price and buy it upon the agreed upon price, kicking the original buyer to the curb. Hardly what I would call ';ownership';.

Just to clarify, the last part of my post was referring to attempted timeshare resales.

DisneyMom, the yearly maint. fees there are right around $1200. That is by far the most of any Orlando area timeshare fees. Near double of what I pay. To timeshare or not? That is only a question you can answer for yourself. Timeshares can be a great way to vacation if you get them for the right price. Which means buying them on the resale market. But even the DVC resale market commands a stiff price, which is good in one way as they somewhat hold there value, where as most timeshares don';t. Our family loves the one we own, and have found it saves us alot of money by taking alot of meals in while we our on vacation, and also all the great entertainment that is free at the resort. We are really considoring buying a second week, as we usually go down about 4 days before we check into our timeshare and stay in a hotel. Quite frankly staying in hotels has lost all its luster for me as I have now grown accustomed to 1300 sq. ft. of space while on vacation without a bunch of misbehaving kids running through the hotels tearing the place apart while there parents sit at the bar. Again it is all a personnal choice on whether it is worth it or not.

    bssd,

Sorry those were probably my children running thru the halls, hence the need for a timeshare. Since staying at Windsor Hills last year, we have also become used to the idea of more room. We couldn%26#39;t go back to a hotel even if we wanted to (we don%26#39;t) and cooking some of our own meals and not tripping over the afore mentioned children is a bonus. Where is yours located?

    Disneymom

Orange Lake Resort and CC. Kissimmee.

A plus for the DVC is that it works on a point system,, ie you can go for the day or week or weeks. They also have the concierge collection which are hotels around the world that you can also book a day at a time, not a whole week. Also at any time of the year not a single week. We just visited NYC for 5 day, and Sonoma two years ago. If it weren%26#39;t for the dues we haven%26#39;t found a down side. Dues started for us in 93 at around $350 and this year were just under $1000 on a $13,000 investment. We%26#39;ve gone every year since 93 and in our case received length of stay tickets for 4 for free till 2000. Our original investment has more than paid for itself. We%26#39;ve had a lot of good memories, my daughters had wonderful times there, but now that they are 17 and 21 we%26#39;re using our points in other places. As stated in other posts be sure you factor in the dues+inflation.

Interestingly, I just received my newsletter from them and depending on whether you%26#39;re in northern or southern IN it may interest you. I%26#39;ll repeat part of what was said.

Late this summer, Disney Vacation Club is scheduled to open Disney%26#39;s Doorway to Dreams, a first-of-its-kind preview center in suburban Chicago%26#39;s popular Woodfield Mall.

The 6,300-square-foot space will feature an interactive family vacation discovery zone, a children%26#39;s play area and a full-scale, two-bedroom model Vacation Home representing accommodations at Disney%26#39;s Animal Kingdom Villas, the eighth and ';wildest'; Disney Vacation Club Resort.

    Just some info.

    bssd-

I have heard Orange Lake was very nice.-

    Rono-

We live in Southern Indiana right across from Louisville KY. Thanks for the info. I had read that in the Orlando Sentinal. Sounds nice.

We will listen to the presentation and decide what is best for us at the time. It is a bonus that there are other places besides just Disney to visit though. Our kids our 12 and almost 5 so Disney pretty much rules right now. Other than the dues, it doesn%26#39;t sound too bad. I don%26#39;t know what we will do now. Thanks for all the good info you guys.

Bubba Gumps Shrimp coming to town?

According to this morning%26#39;s paper Bubba Gumps restaurant has applied for some sort of permit , giving a proposed address somewhere on Seabreeze Blvd- which sounds like it might be near the Bahia Mar Beach Resort just south of Las Olas. I know I have heard of the chain- there used to be one in New Orleans and I think in Orlando as well. Anyone dined in one of them??

Bubba Gumps Shrimp coming to town?

When we go to Universal that is where we eat on our way out.

The fish and chips is made with Mahi Mahi and my daughter and I can share a platter, add a salad (also huge), and we are stuffed for the trip home!

I hope it opens soon!!! There is no where here I really like fish and chips so that will be an add on for us!

    Lisa

Bubba Gumps Shrimp coming to town?

I%26#39;ve eaten at the one in Honolulu it%26#39;s a typical themed chain restaurant selling the usual fare, very family orientated. There is one at the Bayside Market Place in Miami.

I%26#39;ve eaten at the one in Time%26#39;s Square in NYC. We enjoyed it.

I%26#39;ve been to the one in New Orleans or at least it was there. We enjoyed our lunch but it was nothing special.

We have eaten at the one in Hawaii and it is very much like Lulus Bait Shack where we were last week., loved Fort Lauderdale -

Bubba gumps is between Beach place and Bahia Mar.

I remember your earlier post about coming pre cruise , did you enjoy your stay and make out ok without having a car?

I really do want to scout out around Bahia Mar , but I%26#39;m a bit put off by the construction around Las Olas and A1A. I do like shrimp , though.

Wondering if it is in that stretch just south of Las Olas where Coconuts is ( or is that a was I wonder...) At any rate I%26#39;ll keep my eyes peeled for the spot and any local advertising-love those discounts!

Bubba Gumps is scheduled to open March 10 with a special benefit for our local children%26#39;s abuse center , Kids in Distress( nice gesture, Bubba!).

The address is not exactly where I had guessed- 429 S. Beach Blvd- not Seabreeze as I had first heard- so that would put it on the west side of A1A right across from the Ocean and I think south of the Oasis- but I%26#39;m not entirely sure- that%26#39;s where A1A splits going one way in each direction and I always sem to be headed south- this should be on the leg that has northbound traffic only I think. I will have to venture down and take a look! And of course I must dine there soon- it%26#39;s my duty as the Local Expert- and I must have my favorite ( coconut fried shrimp ) and whatever outrageous dessert and impressive signature libation as well- I%26#39;m only doing it for all of you....

I can%26#39;t believe this - it%26#39;s a tragedy- no coconut shrimp on their menu!!! I thought in the movie they talked about shrimp served a bazillion different ways.. It%26#39;s actually a rather small menu- but they claim to have the best bread pudding in the world, so I may have to forgive them- they do have some stiff competition in that dept from the chocolate bread pudding at Shuck and Dive- we%26#39;ll see!

I think we should all ';chip in'; for your research. Let me know what I owe.

I saw another ';new'; restaurant today. Bucky%26#39;s BBQ. It%26#39;%26#39;s on US1 around 14th Street on the west side.

    Key West Wedding

Hello! My fiance and I will be on a cruise which docks in Key West on Feb. 14 2008 and we want to get married on a beach somewhere. I have spent MANY hours looking online, but am having a hard time figuring which businesses are reputable and which beaches would be semi-private and beautiful enough for a wedding. I would greatly appreciate ANY advise you have on the following topics:

    ~beautiful beaches

~reputable wedding planners in the area

    ~reputable ';wedding package'; companies

    ~artistic photographers

    ~limos

    ~florists

    ~etc.

We want a simple, yet elegant wedding but it scares me to plan from across the country! Thank you so much for your help!!!

    great cheap wedding sites

Im from KY and we are trying to plan a wedding in the key west area and I need some great cheap places or agency that offer packages on the beaches.

    great cheap wedding sites

Please use the search box in the left hand corner to search for wedding information. You%26#39;ll find it ad nauseum. Also, try the yahoo group keywestdesinationweddings.

    great cheap wedding sites

I went to www.discoverkeywest.com and then the weddings link. We got married at Fort Zach ($250) and it was perfect! I%26#39;m sorry I can%26#39;t remember their name, but this couple came and got us from the hotel, brought my bouquet and a matching cake. She called to ask what colors I liked the night before. At the beach, she took pictures and then did the ceremony on the beach. After, she took more pictures at sunset, gave us the roll of film and dropped us at our favorite restaurant. License cost $80 and you can get it the day before. Whole thing took an hour. It was fabulous, and I still suggest doing this to everyone we know. Pictures were really nice, too. I%26#39;ll see if I can get the couple%26#39;s name for you.

    Okay, found the info...

    www.mysticdreamcharters.com

Tom and Anne Foley have many packages to choose from. You can be married on the beach or on a boat. The ';You and I'; package starts at $150. The Foleys were very nice. Anne will help with details and suggestions depending on how many people (if any) are with you. We were solo, and it was great! They aslo bring a bottle of champagne and glasses so you can toast after Tom pronounces you ';husband and wife';. Anne poses you on rocks, the beach and knows where to get good sunset photos. Two thumbs up! She took the photo that%26#39;s posted on this forum.

    Good Luck!

We, too, are looking to do an inexpensive, no frills, simple wedding in Key West in May. So far, I%26#39;ve only seen packages which are in the $250 price range. These packages usually come with such ';extras'; as: champagne, bouquet, photographs, and a couple of other things. Personally, we really only want/need someone to do the ';ceremony'; - preferably on a beach or nice garden. Unfortunately, I have not been able to locate such an individual. (Understandable, I guess, as I%26#39;m sure that there is no money to be made by providing such a basic service.) Of course, it is possible to get married at the Clerk of Courts office (where you get the marriage license), but that wouldn%26#39;t be much fun...

BTW... I tried to sign up for the keywestdestinationweddings group on Yahoo, but I have yet to be ';approved'; by the owner of the group, so I cannot view any of the posts. I%26#39;ve been waiting for over a week now. Not sure of the problem.

Good luck with your wedding plans!

You have some very good suggestions so far. Please don%26#39;t plan to get married at the Clerk of Courts office. Key West has hundreds of beautiful locations, but that%26#39;s not one of them. I hope you have a beautiful wedding and a beautiful marriage as well!!

  • Airport Transfer/Car Hire

This will be our 2nd trip to Florida - The first time we stayed in a private villa and booked fly-drive tickets and uplifted our car from the airport before driving down to Kissimmee. This time we are staying in a villa (Terra Verde Resort) and had heard that the resort offers a transfer service from the airport. Unfortunately though we can%26#39;t seem to find out how we would go about booking same. Additionally we would also like to know if a Hired Car could be delivered to the resort or if there is anyplace locally in Kissimmee where we could uplift same.

    Thanks

    Airport Transfer/Car Hire

    BensOn,

There is a Budget location in Old Town in Kissimmee. There is a car rental office in the HIlton at Lake Buena Vista. I suspect that there is one at the Marriott World Center or the Caribe. You can pick up your car there. There is an Enterprise location on the Orange Blossom Trail (17-92-441) about a mile north of 192 in Kissimmee. They will pick you up where ever you are.

    CTR

    Airport Transfer/Car Hire

Have you booked your villa at Terra Verde direct with the owner? If so, ask them, they will have all the details - it would probably have to be authorised by an owner/management company at the resort.

As CruisingtoRetirement mentions, there are local offices you can collect a car from. We did look into having a car delivered to the villa last year for some of our guests but, although I can%26#39;t remember the exact figure, I know it was quite expensive to have this service so they opted to collect it locally instead.

Make sure you book your car through a UK agent with a pre-paid voucher before you arrive - don%26#39;t rent the car locally, it works out much more expensive.

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated!!

  • Sanibel Red Algae Alert

The Sanibel beach from Nerita (Interaction or Middle Gulf and East Gulf) and more than a half mile west of Sundial Inn has extensive amounts of Red Algae. It is 1 to 10 inches deep and 10 to 30 feet wide. In some areas the Algae is quite thick in the water edge for 4 to 6 feet.

The Red Algea has remained on the beach for extend periods of time and is decaying causing an obnoxious odor. This odor is especially strong when you are walking into the wind in a easterly direction. I experience some throat iterations caused by the Red Algae vapor.

I have been on Sanibel Island for the last 8 weeks and conditions have been getting worst each week. Please join and contribute to PURRE to support take action to solve this environmental and economic crisis. Visit www.PURRE.org for more information

    Sanibel Red Algae Alert

Rainstorm or Sue, can either of you verify the above statements and if you have even even heard of this PURRE? I always look askance at posts for never before seen posters that have such an inflammatory bent. I realize that section of beach isn%26#39;t covered in the Sanibel beach reports, which seem to have stopped for some mysterious reason.

    Sanibel Red Algae Alert

the purre website is legit it seems. They have a link for the petition from the City of Sanibel. The site says it was formed by concerned citizens of SW Florida and the problems with draining LAke O.

Clearly the post is a huge exaggeration to try and get people on board to get the state to do something about the problem.

Maybe it is a good thing to make the situation look worse than it is, but this isn%26#39;t the right place for it in my opinion.

the post looks a lot like SPAM.

I agree with Invisible Man....this is NOT the place to put a post like that.

Tourm: we have been so busy that I have not been able to go look at the beach.

SaveSanibel you are not ';saving'; Sanibel by posting something like that......you are causing more hurt to the tourism industry by posting something like that.

Also, I checked ';charity watch';, ';Charitynavigator'; and ';Charitystar'; websites and pure.org is not listed. Maybe if it is legit, it is to new to be rated, but I would be hesitant to send money to an unknown org that is providing false information. That said, I hope it is NOT forum spam, and that they solve the problem.

It is a legit organization....a friend of mine is one Board members. So I can vouch for PURRE

Thanks Sue. I appreciate knowing it%26#39;s a real organization.

I have no problem with negative beach condition reports providing they are TRUE. I see no point in whipping folks into a frenzy with exaggerations - but then again one person%26#39;s %26#39;not so bad%26#39; is another%26#39;s %26#39;so awful I%26#39;ll never go back%26#39;. It%26#39;s all subjective opinion and one review of Sundial did say the beach was bad and stank last week, so I guess it isn%26#39;t entirely wrong.

PURRE Water Coalition - People Unitied to Restore our Rivers and estuaries ...nothing sinister here.

Sue - I am glad to hear it is legitimate, hopefully they will have some affect on fixing the root of the algae. I just like to know where the donations are actually going, what operating costs are, how much money is actually spent on field operations as opposed to executive costs. I understand people who live on Sanibel are working very deligently to fix this problem, as all of us should who visit regularly.

You can read all about it on the website.

There is also a petition to clean up sanibel beaches on the site

    First time to Fort Lauderdale

My boyfriend and I are thinking of spending a weekend in Fort Lauderdale. Can anyone recommend a reasonable hotel? How far is Miami? And I love beaches...which beach is the nicest??? South Beach? Good nighlife? Sorry for all the questions.

    Thanks in advance.

    First time to Fort Lauderdale

    Hi 1:

The beach question everyone will argue about. If you want fashion and bodies, then you might like South Beach better...

Miami is about 25 miles south of the Fort Lauderdale International Airport, and you will need a car for it to be economical if you fly into Fort Lauderdale.

I think Fort Lauderdale Beach is the best, and there are plenty of bars, dance clubs, eateries and the like to enjoy right on A1A between Las Olas Boulevard and Broward Boulevard. The hotels can be pricey (over $200 a night) for anything not a dump...you just have to search the sites for rates.

If you stay in Ft. Lauderdale, check with the hotel -- they might have a shuttle to/from the airport. If you stay in Miami, you might check the miami board, or the miami beach board, and fly into Miami.

    Whatever you decide, have fun!

    Lisa

    First time to Fort Lauderdale

    Thanks Lisa for your help.

Don%26#39;t care for fashion and bodies...just for a clear beautiful swimmable ocean!!! And some heat...since it%26#39;s freezing up here! lol.

We will be flying to Fort Lauderdale for sure....it%26#39;s much cheaper than flying into Miami. But I do think renting a car is a good idea...from the airport??? How about West Palm beach...just trying to get ideas on what to do when I%26#39;m there.

    Thx.

West Palm is roughly 40 miles to the North of Fort Lauderdale. It%26#39;s further from FLL than Miami.

If you want the nicest beaches in the area, check out the John U. Lloyd Beach area. Completely unspoiled by commercial development. It%26#39;s just south of Fort Lauderdale. Normally I would say you need a car to get there but a catamaran sailboat called Spirit Of Lauderdale is running limited ferry service there for a small fee. Ride a boat to get to the beach.

I just looked up the prices on their site, it%26#39;s $55 per adult but that includes round trip and lunch at the Loggerhead Cafe at the park.

    http://www.tropicalsailing.com/schedule.htm

There is actaully an area of Fort Lauderdale beach known as ';South Beach'; (sorry, don%26#39;t mean to confuse you!) That has public grills, volleyball nets, a fitness area, basketball court, and is the widest stretch of beach we have so you can find a nice private spot. If you are into sports or grilling food on the beach (which i am!) its fantastic! If you prefer a more see and be seen ';scene';, the beach right around Las Olas Blvd. (the main drag) and the Elbo room bar is a good place for people watching. A hundred yards north of that is ';Beach Place'; which is a 3 story outdoor mall of restraunts bars and shops. If you want to eat, drink, or shop while at the beach...its got you covered. Heading further North around sunrise blvd is an interesting area of ';divey'; bars (not really the right word...but if you check it out i think you%26#39;ll see what i mean) which is a fun area. North of that is alot more laid back and quiet with free parking along A1A if you get there early enough. Fort Lauderdale is a fantastic beach town, no doubt.

As for South Beach, Miami... while fun, and a great place to see once (or twice!) in your life, I much prefer the Fort Lauderdale scene.

Thanks to everyone for your help....Very helpful!

    Vacation countdown!!!

    This will be our 2nd trip to Destin staying at the same place as last year Sandestin Beachside Two. The boys get out of school on May 25th, so we%26#39;ll start the drive that evening try to get in about six hours stop at a hotel finish up Saturday and check-in for a week. I have say we%26#39;re all starting to get ';vacation slap happy';

My wife started a vacation change bucket that we%26#39;ve been dropping our change in for the past year for the boys to use for extra spending money. I%26#39;m going to guess there%26#39;s a few hundred bucks sitting in that bucket. The problem is I never have change in my pocket now :)

Anyway, 78 day until the fun starts.

    Vacation countdown!!!

    What a nice post!!!

I hope you have a wonderful time.I hope you get Destinitis and keep coming back for many years.

    Vacation countdown!!!

countdown? Is it that time already. Sounds good to me. Lets see today that makes you with 77 and me with 71.

First timer with 2.5 yr old and pregnant

My husband and I are planning a trip to Disney World in last week of May and have the following questions, keeping in mind that

    - I will be 7 months pregnant

    - have a 2.5 yr old

    - only 5 or maybe 6 days of visit

    1. Park - thinking of spending 1-2 dys in MK and 1 dy in AK, the 2 parks which will appeal most to our 2.5 yr old.

Questions: Is it worthwhile to also spend 1 day in Seaworld ? Should we skip Epcot (which seems to me is more interesting to older kids/adults)?

    2. Resorts - AKL sounds great as my 2.5 yr old loves animals but sounds like it%26#39;s not as accessible as the Polynesian, GF or Wilderness Lodge.

Question: Which resort would you recommend ?

    3. Transport - should we rent a car ? If we stay at either Polynesian, GF or WL, sounds like a car is not necessary.

    4. Kennedy Space Center - would like to spend 1 day (most likely one of the wkend days when the parks will be most crowded given the Mem Day holiday). How far is the drive from Disney World?

    5. What%26#39;s the best way to book the trip ? Seems like i can just book a package on the WDW official site or use a travel agent - will a travel agent have a cheaper price for the same package ? If the price diffn is minimal, I wont want to spend too much time getting quotes for the best price....

    Thanks in advance for feedback

If anyone who is experienced visiting WDW with preschoolers or while pregnant has any additional advice, it will be much appreciated too.

First timer with 2.5 yr old and pregnant

    are you crazy?

    seriously...

I would pick somewhere else to go for the following reasons

    1. you can%26#39;t ride on anything

    2. you child won%26#39;t remember the trip

    3. its not relaxing

    4. your child is so young it doesn%26#39;t matter where he goes.

    5. preganant in may heat? do you know how hot it is orlando? pregnant women sit inside, with five fans blowing on them and the AC on full blast.

I know I sound harsh... but seriously. I would go to the beaches... anywhere but disney.

go in 4 years maybe five. your children will be the right age than, and presumably (as I do not know you and your husband%26#39;s life plan) not pregnant.

save disney for later and life. take yourself and your son to the beach, relax before the baby comes and save yourself a ton of money!

First timer with 2.5 yr old and pregnant

PS as I am the oldest, I remember my mom pregnant. She tired going to disney during both pregnancies. both with my brother and sister my mom had to be on bed rest. no its not disney%26#39;s fault... but it sure did exhaust her. It is also important to know that, my mom trying to go to disney while being pregnant is because she knows every niche of that place, every relaxing spot, every super air conditioned area... becuase she worked there.

PPS you seriously cannot ride on any ride. you will go there and sit outside all day while your husband takes your son. so you will not enjoy the ';reaction'; to the disney ';magic'; everyone will talk about on this forum. it wont be safe for your baby to go on the rides, and you could risk premature labor.

I am not being mean. just being blunt. please come to orlando and enjoy yourself. Perhaps doing it when your children are older is what I would do if I were you. but again... im not you, and this is just merely one native orlandian opinion about something she saw her family go through.

:) i hope you figure it all out and it results in a lovely vacation for you and your family!

I don%26#39;t mean to be rude, but Seminolegirl has brought up some excellent points. Is it entirely necessary that you go to Disney at this time in your life? You will stand in very long lines in high heat %26amp; humidity. You%26#39;ve listed an itinerary that%26#39;s very full, even for a couple without kids. If you%26#39;re flying, you may have to check that out, because most airlines have restrictions for how late in your pregnancy you can fly. If you%26#39;re driving- God help you because that%26#39;s a very long drive to do pregnant.

Again, I don%26#39;t mean to be a busy body, but SG is right about the risks involved. Don%26#39;t take a healthy pregnancy for granted. Have you presented this plan to your obstetrician or midwife? If they%26#39;ve ever been to Disnay in May, they will tell you the same thing Seminolegirl did.

When I read your post I thought all the same things that semi and potato feet have said as I have some experience.

I arranged to go to Disney in May 2002 knowing I would be 5 months pregnant as we always went with friends and I mistakenly thought that as a very fit %26amp; active 24 year old I could handle it.

Well I couldn%26#39;t. I was exhausted, I couldn%26#39;t go on loads of rides, it was hot, I was miserable. I ended up leaving my husband %26amp; friends at the parks and spending most afternoons lying by the pool relaxing.

I was probably quite similar to you as although only 5 months pregnant I was expecting twins (only found this out 10 days before I was due to leave!)

We didn%26#39;t go back to Disney until last year when my boys were 4. The difference was unbelievable.

As the other girls have said, please think carefully about this. Disney will wait for perhaps a better time for you

    All the best

    .

    You should definitely wait.

I agree too, that you should wait since the 2.5 year old will not remember anything about the trip. It is hot and muggy in May. If you want to go on a vacation before the baby is born I would definitely pick some place cooler. All you need for the little one is a pool and a popsicle for a happy trip.

I agree with everyone else. Your child won%26#39;t appreciate or remember a thing and you%26#39;ll be very uncomfortable. It%26#39;s all about walking and waiting in line and being 7 months pregnant, it will be too much for you.

How about a trip to Bermuda whereby you can hang out by the beach and relax.

If I had read your post two weeks ago I would have said go and relax......enjoy Disney through your 2 1/2 years eyes. Ok well...I had forgot how NOT relaxing Disney is. I was there last week and it was INSANE how busy and fast paced everything was. I love Disney and like earlier post say it isn%26#39;t their fault but you can not relax there. I would have not enjoyed it while being pregnant at all. Now as far as a 2 1/2 year goes it is so fun to see it with them but of course they will remember nothing. I have taken 2 different 2 1/2 year olds and I really didn%26#39;t think it was hard to take them at that age at all but as far as you being pregnant I would say you need to do something more pampering and relaxing. Also, are you sure your doctor would want you to travel so far away at that point?

just thought i%26#39;d add my point of view. We went last september. My daughter was 4 1/2 pregnant and my granddaughter 2 1/2. my daughter coped quite well with the heat, as long as we took everything at a steady pace. As for my granddaughter, everyone here says a 2 1/2 year old wont remember. Well she has not stopped talking about it since. She asks me every day when we can go back, remembers which characters she saw, even what the hotel was like. She even has imaginary conversations with shamu every day on the phone to tell him she%26#39;s coming back. She cant wait till her baby sister is old enough so she can take her and show her everything. She may be an exception, but if your child is bright, i%26#39;d say go for it. You wont be able to do many of the rides but you%26#39;ll still have a great time. Just dont try and pack everything in, you wont be able to do it and drink plenty. And definatly go to sea world.

The 2 1/2 year old will remember it for a while but not for a lifetime.

Many of us have seen the sad results of women in late pregnancy who push too hard. Is it worth it?

  • Chicken/egg question for OCD planning experts

I%26#39;m trying to plan our vacation so that on the magic 180th day out I%26#39;ll be able to have my ducks in a row to make reservations (several character meals are desired, so I know this is important). However, how do I decide which park on which day when I don%26#39;t yet/can%26#39;t yet find out the information for which parks have Extra Magic Hours on specific days.

From my understanding, that info won%26#39;t be available until six months in advance, giving me no time to plan in advance for the restuarants.

How do OCD planners handle this discrepancy???

    Thanks!

Chicken/egg question for OCD planning experts

I think www.allears.net have common dates, and ';peak days'; charts. to let you know what days are best for which park during the time of year you go.

There are several guide books, I suggest you try to pick one up.

Well unless im doing math wrong... 180 days is 6 months.... so you could have a loose plan, look at the magic hours, compare them with your peak days chart and make a decision. Its certainly a mornings worth of work, but if you do it that first day (6 months out) than you can pull it all together that day and be one of the first people to get reservations.

I suggest going to barnes and noble or borders and getting a planning book, they will help gather a loose plan that might have some minor last minute tweaking as magic hours tend to be the same for the same parks at the same time of year.

Chicken/egg question for OCD planning experts

Unless you%26#39;re going at Christmas, or another very busy time, you can be a couple of days into the 6 month window. In January, I had booked some places a month before, %26amp; walked right in to the Garden restaurant (Chip %26amp; Dale) at Epcot at the last minute. One exception to this is Cinderellas dining in the MK castle. Be on the phone at the beginning of the business day (Orlando time) exactly 6 months to the day/minute. I%26#39;ve heard of people phoning at 9:15 am 180 days prior, %26amp; it%26#39;s booked!

As seminolegirl said, get a book, or check touringplans.com to determine crowds. Another thing you could do is book a restaurant for 2 days, maybe one under your husband%26#39;s name if they%26#39;re fussy, %26amp; then cancel one when you get the extra magic hours schedule. Just be sure to cancel it ASAP, so somebody else can book the time. Good luck!

You%26#39;ll have a much easier time if your trip begins at the latter end of a month (you didn%26#39;t specify the dates you%26#39;ll be traveling to Orlando).

Say for instance, you%26#39;re traveling at the end of September, so you really can%26#39;t call for dinner reservations until the end of March. However, the Dinsey calendar for September is posted at the beginning of March, so you have some ';lead time'; to see which days in September are having specific events.

If, however you are traveling at the beginning of a month, you won%26#39;t have quite the lead time, but the Disney calendar does post 6 full months ahead of time, so you%26#39;ll have a small window for planning.

We are going in two weeks and I made all my reservations 180 days in advance. I asked questions on this forum, read all the menus and wrote down what we were interested in. Then when I was able to see what parks had the extra magic hours I made my final plan and called right away. I had several choices written down just in case one of my choices was already booked full. We are going during a very busy time but it all worked out. I am a planner so it killed me to wait until the 180 day mark. Good luck and have fun.

I do enjoy the planning part.....and it is kind of fun watching my family becomed convinced that I%26#39;m crazy!

We are going Thanksgiving week, from Saturday before until Friday after, so it will be quite a busy time, but given the information you all shared, I will have a little leeway between knowing the EMH info and being able to book.

    One other question:

Is the 180 day out date the calendar date six months earlier (like May 19th for a Nov.19th arrival) or is it actually 180 days (counted out) before arrival?

    Thanks so much!

Do these restaurants really book out 180 days in advance?

I am having enough trouble deciding what to eat for dinner in 2 hours time. I really can%26#39;t think about what I might want in 6 months time!

I%26#39;m having the same issue. And I didn%26#39;t even begin to plan our late June trip until a month or so ago, so I missed that 180 day mark. I don%26#39;t care if we do the Cinderella thing, but we do have the dining plan and we want to be able to get the table service we paid for. Do I REALLY need to make reservations this far out? Or am I out of luck even as we speak?

jenlagirl- I believe that they actually count out the 180 days. When I called in September for our trip this month they told me I called 2 days too early because I had called on Sept. 25 for a March 25 arrival.

jolynda- I%26#39;m no expert but I believe summer time is quite busy so you may want to check into making some table service reservations. From what I%26#39;ve read on this forum over the past 6 months the dining plan is very popular so places book up pretty fast. Maybe just give them a call and see what is available. We are going in less than 2 weeks during a very busy time so I made my reservations exactly 180 days in advance and still had to use some of my second choices because my first choices were already full on the days I was looking for.

    Beach Sand in UK

What%26#39;s the story about someone who lives along the beach in Saint (something), and the wind blows the sand off the beach onto his property and he puts the sand back onto the beach and they are fineing him 50,000 pounds.

    Beach Sand in UK

Only just caught this but it seems that the guy lives right by the beach so as the wind blows in so does the sand, he sweeps it up and puts it back on the beach but he has now been threatned with a 拢50.000 fine or even a prison sentance because the local authorities say its fly tipping (dumping rubbish) to my knowledge as yet there is no outcome.

  • Dune Deck Cafe in WPB

The Dune Deck Cafe will be hosting Plein Air Artists 22-24 Mar I%26#39;m being told. Is this a nice cafe? Good Food? Reasonable$$?

BYW-It%26#39;s the Mango Inn, not Mango Hotel. My Bad. Any info from The Locals regarding these establishments would be greatly appreciated.

    Dune Deck Cafe in WPB

Dune Deck has great food, right on beach, VERY reasonable. Unfortunately I know nothing about the hotel. Sorry.

    Sanibel or Capaiva South Seas

We will be going down the middle of May: would love a small inn on the Gulf, and have looked at South Seas, which looks very attractive but quite large. Have a biker in the group of 2.....Many of the cottage colonies sound as if they are older??Is t his true?

WE love sunsets, the beach and good food: open to all suggestions, as one get sorta confused when looking at the sites that list lodging at both places. Thank you.

    Sanibel or Capaiva South Seas

I will make the assumption that biker means the kind with an engine? If not, there are bicycle paths only on Sanibel although I am not sure about the SSR grounds.

Sanibel has more options for food than Captiva just in the numbers of establishments and I would guess that by and large the general population of visitors is younger.

When I was on Sanibel last week I heard a bit about the unfinished business going on at South Seas with its construction projects. There is also a possibility that it might be sold again according to a local who is very active in the community.

If you go back you will see quite a few posts about cottages on Captiva not at SSR that Tourmaline recommends- thiese might serve your purposes.

    Sanibel or Capaiva South Seas

Cottages are all older and quite small. Nostalgic, yes. Some that are privately owned are quite lovely, but still very small square footage. Also, if looking at cottages, check to see if they will allow 2 vehicles as most allow one and only 1 car.

With a biker [assuming as MSC did you mean someone with a motorcycle] you should check with the agencies and some condo association may not allow them. If you look at cottages be sure and call and ask. If you trailer the bike, no trailers are permitted at condos and most homes. As for places like West Wind and Sunset Beach, you%26#39;d need to ask. [RV%26#39;s and trailers are specifically banned from most condo parking.] If it%26#39;s a bicycle, then you%26#39;ll need to stay on Sanibel. There are no bike paths on Captiva and a number of accidents have occurred.

As for South Seas, well it is HUGE. The quality of the condo style units can vary a fair bit as they are all privately owned. Great sunsets from anywhere on Captiva%26#39;s beaches. A better buy would be the townhome style condos at Captiva Shores, or if you%26#39;re feeling for a very upscale the at Captiva Villas - that is a group of just 4 units directly across Captiva Drive from the beach. Most are available thru Royal Shell. Captiva Shores try Royal Shell or www.captiva-island.com

If you want the main pool at South Seas and will use the trolley [and if you%26#39;re not Harborside, you%26#39;ll need it] the I%26#39;d say rent thru the resort. The most recent report is renting thru an agency you will be offered full resort access for $75/day PER ADULT. [The thud you heard was me fainting.] It will be seeing construction around the main pool area [a third pool will be going in] at near the entrance [a Golden Gate Spa will be under construction] during the off-season and there is still a fair amount to do at Land%26#39;s End. Beach Villas have the quietest location right now. Not all have been renovated.

There are more restaurants on Sanibel but a couple of the best are where Captiva and Sanibel meet at Blind Pass. Castaways Cottages are there as well. Great beach location, but I%26#39;d suggest staying bayside for quiet and walking across the street to the beach. Only a few of the units are updated. Terrific location though. Mad Hatter and Sunset Grill are both right there as is a local bar, Lazy Flamingo. Doc Ford%26#39;s is about 12 minutes away toward the main part of Sanibel and Old Captiva House and Green Flash about 10 minutes in the other direction just south of the main village area.

There are some nice small homes with pools available along the Tween Waters stretch on Captiva. Captiva Cove House, Baywatch House or Baywatch Cottage, and a number of others. Just a stroll across Captiva Drive for an all but private beach and great Sunsets. Houses usually allow more flexibly in parking. Take a look at www.royalshell.com for the properties above. There are others in that area including some seriously upscale and very large homes. There are also some modest places thru them and other agencies.

On Sanibel, condos are a great but try for West Gulf Drive for sunsets. East and Middle Gulf don%26#39;t see much on the way of sunsets as they run east southeast. By west Gulf the beach is getting south southwest.

Thank you for all of that important information. The biker is supplier of his OWN POWER, so sounds as if Sanibel with bike trails. All in all Sanibel sounds the better of the two....and we have always enjoyed cottages......if not too shacky!!!!

Some cottages are pretty upscale, though small. See Cottages to Castles and check out their cottages. They have 2 at White Caps and two privately owned one bedroom units all extremely nice. RoyalShell.com has a couple at White Caps as well.

Forty Fifteen has a good location and while the cottages are luxe they have such a loyal following they don%26#39;t advertise. I think Jake has used them. Beachview is also on West Gulf drive. Ask about updated units. Blue Dolphin have a good location as well, but other than comments on them being clean but simple I really know nothing about them.

Try http://www.ssl-leeislandcoast.com/sanibel.htm Most cottages are east end and would have a sunrise view rather than sunset.

also see www.scvrma.org for rental agencies.

    Can someone define ';Disney Magic';

On another thread much has been talked about Disney Magic in the context of Orlando WDW versus other parks.

I don%26#39;t really get this concept. I enjoy Universal IOA much more than Disney %26amp; I take it it has no Disney Magic?

I think holiday magic comes from yourself and those with you.

    So what constitutes Disney Magic?

    Answers on a postcard please!

    Can someone define ';Disney Magic';

Jenni, I never got it either. We had a great time at WDW, but then we have a great time wherever we go. I agree with you, the magic comes from being with our kids and doing the family thing. Some folks just really get in to it I guess. These folks also seem to kind of get offended when you just don%26#39;t get the %26#39;magic%26#39;. That other forum (the one I think you are talking about) is serious about their %26#39;magic%26#39; and some folks seem to be on the verge of tears when their family members don%26#39;t understand their %26#39;magic%26#39; feelings.

    Can someone define ';Disney Magic';

    Jenni-

Personally ive found Disney at Orlando being one of the few must do%26#39;s in your life. Paris is much closer but wouldn%26#39;t be the same.

That said, we%26#39;ve been there and now done it and personally its been more of experiencing very good theme parks in quick succession.

Mickey and gang are not really up to it these days since they seem to belong to the generation gone.

My kids are more into Dora the Explorer and co and if they were part of Disney then they would have enjoyed even more since they could directly relate to the character!

It%26#39;s like believing or not believing in Santa.

If you believe, you have the magic surrounding you. If you don%26#39;t believe, well, you%26#39;re missing the whole thing.

Disney magic depends for adults on their childhood memories. As a little girl i was mesmerised by cinderella, beauty and the beast etc... not everyone has disney imprinted on their memories. My boyfriend had no connection with disney or the %26#39;magic%26#39; but still had an awesome time

I think disney magic does exist for some but its not essential, you need good company to enjoy anything.

Trying to take it apart, here%26#39;s what I get:

Magic Kingdom is the model for the ';Disney Magic'; in my book; other Disney parks go with or against the below principles in different ways

Appealing to idealized notions of royalty and romance

';########'; childhood dreams (flying like Peter Pan and Tinkerbell)

Old time idealized notions of America and the American Dream, and progress (sort of a non-sectarian non-violent postmillenialism) without being so ';futuristic'; and ';cool'; (though Disney is not immune to trying to be ';futuristic'; and ';cool';); yet nostalgic; of course, thinking about old time notions of progress above things is nostalgic (think ';Main Street USA'; and ';Carosel of Progress';)

Emphasis on talking animals and Disney characters and cartoons that aren%26#39;t so ';violent'; or ';dangerous'; (like Looney Toons or ';Itchy and Scratchy';)

To some extent, tending toward a traditional understanding of beauty and childlike simplicity over ugliness (the Old lady in snow white as an exception); even the villans in the non-Disney things tend to be more artistic than the villans in other fantasy movies and animated features (one example: compare the Buzz Lightyear ride to the Men in Black Alien Attack and you%26#39;ll see the difference; one is more colorful and pretty in some ways; the other is cooler, more advanced, and the targets are uglier).

And, of course, a childlike utopianism about different nations and cultures coming together (';Its a Small World'; of course)

And also a more straightfoward way of looking at and talking about things (not the snappy quick at times over kids head and ';wicked humor of ';The Simpsons'; and ';Family Guy'; animated series).

To some extent, ';tenderness'; ';gentleness'; and being nice over against Endeavour105 type behavior (lol!)

Also, the relative ';innocence'; and childlike atmosphere of not serving beer at Magic Kingdom

To some extent, all these things rolled together somehow make up ';Disney Magic';. Yet there are some things which don%26#39;t necessarily go with these things, yet get rolled up in Disney magic (';Pirates of the Caribbean';, for example, appeals to childhood dreams, but is hardly ';########';, though it is somewhat idealistic)

Tomorrowland is futuristic, but in an almost quaint way

This is my somewhat ';clumsy'; attempt to define the Disney Magic.

Of course, Disney as a company and movie studio goes with or against these virtues at any time. It seems that in the Pixar era it has at times completely jettisoned these things, but not as fast as say other studios have; ';The Incredibles'; may be cool, but not as hip as, say ';Madagascar';.

Also, I personally hypothesize that Magic Kingdom is more of a park for adults rather than kids. Its more for adults who want to become a child again in some ways, or want to live vicariously as a child through their children. That%26#39;s why so many people bring young kids who can%26#39;t or may not remember what is going on; its more for the adults than kids. And adults are more capable of feeling the nostalga that Disney brings than kids are, though kids can be taught to be nostalgic too.

And, as referred to above (I meant to say it but forgot to type it, I think), the idea of being a child living in a fairy tale.

Disney Magic: As you enter the park, you wallet like magic comes out of your pocket, opens, and by the time you leave all of your money disappears!

I don%26#39;t think it makes any difference who you are. Anything your heart desires will come to you if your heart is in your dream. No request is too extreme - Fate is kind; She brings the sweet fulfillment of secret longing like a bolt out of the blue.

In summary, Fate steps in and sees you through and when you wish upon a star your dreams come true, and that%26#39;s how I guess I would define it (without straying from the topic).

I%26#39;m actually thinking of marketing this reply as a Disney song if I can tone it down a little. If Phil Collins is reading this, please get in touch, or tell Elton.

It is the look in your little girls eyes as tinkerbell starts her descent from the fairy tale castle.

    That is the magic.

    Recipe for Disney Magic...

    1 cup Goofy

    1 cup nostalgia

    1/2 cup pixie dust

    8 oz winter chill, warmed

    3 1/2 (1 lb) bag %26#39;o cash

Grease body with sunblock. Cover head with mouse ears. Mix parks as directed on park hopper. Pour money out of wallet. Mix Dole Whips with funnel cakes and shake on Everest. Add Zantac and mix with Mountain Dew. Spoon over... well lets not go there. Bake 10 hours at 90 degrees. Cool completely in resort%26#39;s pool.

is clearwater the place to party????

Hello me and a friend are contemplating a trip to clearwater this summer around june time. Is there plenty going on ie clubs and bars to keep to yuong lads entertained. Also is there a large collage scene there (girls). Any advise would be muchly appretiated.

    Thanks Jonny uk

is clearwater the place to party????

There are plenty of bars, not so much in clubs. You would have to go to Ybor City, which is about a 20 minute drive during non-rush hour. 7th ave is completely lined with bars and clubs with lots of vaiety to suite anyones music style. We do have a large student presence during spring break, not sure about June. I know our local schools will be out and our local gals will be out in full force.

is clearwater the place to party????

Beware what happens in Ybor stays in Ybor, lol.

Clearwater is the more livlier area on this coast of FL.

http://www.shephards.com/ this hotel is the biggest party place on the beach. Good pool/tikibar scene (girls).

final thoughts on where to eat

I think we%26#39;ve narrowed it down now- we %26#39;ll be there 5 nights -1st night getting in around 5- may just order a pizza- but the other 4 nights -I am thinking we%26#39;ll do - Mad Hatter w/out kids- already have a reservation, Bubble Room, Green Flash, and Harborside at SSR- I am thinking Bubble Room and Green Flash don%26#39;t take reservations- can we send one group ahead to get on the list or does the whole group have to be there- I may call and see if they do call ahead- Thanks

final thoughts on where to eat

Everything except the pizza sounds like a plan to me. As of yesterday the permit to serve food at Slices, the pizza place they built at the main pool area, had not yet been issued. Mama Rose%26#39;s across from the SSR entrance is closed. Nearest pizza place would then be on Sanibel about 30 minutes away. Maybe SSR has something for room service.

    Premium mall location

Where is the premium mall located?

    Premium mall location

On International Drive, just north of the 536. It%26#39;s next to a Publix, walgreens, %26amp; the Dixieland stampede. It%26#39;s south of Seaworld.

    Premium mall location

It%26#39;s Premium Outlets ... your Google Gods know the answer and may even have a map.

There is a web site and you can join another little club and get email offers and coupons. It is free so it has to be worth the bother if it saves a few dollars. In my case it was really worth while last Summer. Not all stores have coupons but you may be lucky!

Orlando Premium Outlets is not right on I-Drive, though its close. You go south on I-Drive south of SeaWorld, and take a right on Vineland Ave, just past Floridays resort. You%26#39;ll pass the Hilton GVC International Drive entrance on the left on Vineland, and then you%26#39;ll come to the Premium Outlets on Vineland Ave. You can take the I-Ride Trolley to Premium Outlets from I-Drive (www.iridetrolley.com).

Eddiek- sorry, you%26#39;re right. It%26#39;s not on International drive, but you can see it from there so I forgot it%26#39;s proper location. Thanks for noticing my error.

Get up early and have a hearty breakfast. Get dressed in hiking boots and loose light clothing and pack provisions enough for say 5 hours ... and lots and lots of cold water ... then you should be able to set off before 9am.

With a fair wind behind you and good traffic conditions you should be in the outlets before 11am ... if you maintain a steady walking pace.

If you buy lots of merchandise it may take a little longer on your return in the heat of the late afternoon after a full days shopping.

Of course you can walk it - just leave full details of your route at the hotel and tell your relatives what time you intend to return.

Writing out your hotel details and sticking them on your rucksack can also help in identification

    Easy peasy!!!

If you are going from Disney,go south on SR535 and take a left on Vineland Road just under I-4-there%26#39;s a sign for Vineland Avenue. Then just drive untill you get to the Premium Outlet Mall,you%26#39;ll pass the Marriott Village on your left.

I went to the website that Vegas mentioned and signed up for their ';VIP Club';. Gave me lots of great info on sales and there%26#39;s a coupon book I can print off before we go!

Thanks Vegas for the great tip(s)!!

  • My likes and dislikes about driving in U.S.A

Im sure i have many of both that are unlisted, but since today for me was noticable, i thought i%26#39;d post.

    Like-

The I4. Contrary to all you regulars, ive travelled weekdays, weekends, morning and evening rush and from Sanford - never had any delay and 70mph throughout in the last couple of weeks.

Freeway junction numbers posted by miles as opposed to consecutive numbers.

Helpful matrix displays showing any congestion and time to a certain junction.

Turning right on red works so well.

Any lane on freeways is kinda fun, and sure beats fast lane and middle lane hoggers on UK motorways.

The trucks keep overtaking me. In the UK they feel like stationery obstacles.

Fewer trucks than in the UK.

Advertising of facilities available at junctions.

I tow trailers at home and like the standard fixing on cars and trucks, just slot the tow bar in.

    Dislike -

No barriers between opposing carriageways on the freeways.

The US sets the standards in road safety but -

    - still not obligatory for helmets to ride motor bikes

    - those damn trucks have no side barriers between wheels, you often feel like you%26#39;re gonna get swallowed up and go under the trailing wheels.

    People who you let in never say or motion %26#39;thankyou%26#39;

My likes and dislikes about driving in U.S.A

Axel, how was the beach at Clearwater ?

My likes and dislikes about driving in U.S.A

Went to St.Petes in the end.

Nice and dusty white but loads of little shells all over the place.

    A nice few hours chillin%26#39;

Axel, helmet laws vary by state. That%26#39;s why you see bikers with bags (luggage that is!) on the back of their bikes sometimes have their helmets strapped on the top instead of on their heads. They need them if they ride through a helmet law state but prefer the freedom of choice when not.

FL used to have a helmet law, but they changed it a number of years ago....previous poster correct....varies by state

With out been sexist axel do you think that a lady would be ok to drive then as I want to give it ago but I have never drove on the left side before.

Don%26#39;t the good ol%26#39; bikers have to amke a decision on their Insurance that the third party is no longer liable if the biker is not wearing a helmet. This seemed to be the debate when law was changed to allow them to do what they want. Totally ridiculous in my opinion after having a friend go into a vegetative state thru not wearing his helmet - but there you go Florida - its your choice.

Left or right, driving is much easier here in the US than in the UK.

Bigger roads, bigger roads, and the roads are quite big too!

Also car parking at the supermarkets makes it simple even for ladies.

    Hi BS

I don%26#39;t know if it%26#39;s a man/woman thing but my husband definitely coped better with the car than I did, no problem with the driving itself but I really struggled with the car, my brain wouldn%26#39;t accept that the gear stick was on the right hand side and not the left.

I am generally better at the navigating though believe it or not so we stick to him driving and me map reading.

Good luck if you try it.

Axel - must agree we found the I4 brilliant and we should introduce the turning ';left'; on red-lights over here.

Totally agree - especially the thing about size of car parking spaces. Wasn%26#39;t the %26#39;turn right on red%26#39; introduced during the last fuel crisis in the 70%26#39;s? Makes a lot of sense but confuses the hell out of non US visitors - they refuse to turn in spite of the horns and gesticulations from cars behind them.

I also like the word gesticulation and may use that again today.

I too have benefited from the use of multisyllable words and I commend your apposite use of elongated adjectives. You bring a freshness and a literary sense of well being to our cherished forum.

Radisson Worldgate + cruise, mexico, daytona

Has anyone purchased the package from Florida Travel Bureau that gives you 14 days and 4 locations including the Radisson Worldgate and a cruise for like $250. I keep getting e-mails about it. If so, how did it work out for you?

    www.fltravelbureau.com/Travel/Legal.asp鈥?/a>

It looks too good to be true, but I am tempted.

Radisson Worldgate + cruise, mexico, daytona

I purchased that package today. I hope there will be no problems.

Radisson Worldgate + cruise, mexico, daytona

    Hi

I was going to purchase that too, but Im skeptical as well. Let me know if you hear of anything different.

I do know the hotels are:

    cancun

    aqua marina resort

    puerta vallarta

    Hacienda resort and spa

( Coco beach no longer offered)

    Daytona

    bermuda house resorts

    holiday inn

    daysinn

    Ivanhoe beach resort

port taxs 186/person cruise port caniral - orlando

Please let me know if you hear of anything further about this offer. leahcats(at)gmail.com

They also say its valid for 2 years. I guess one of my main concerns is, what if the company goes out of business before that, and you haven%26#39;t booked your trip yet, then you are out the money.

    tour books and guides

do you think it would be smart of me to pick one of these up?and can i get them at the airport? whenever i go to vegas ect i always get these and they always have coupons in them,.

do you know if they have them in F.l?

    joni

    tour books and guides

    Visit www.sunny.org

That is the Convention and Visitors Bureau site and they will send you a ';kit'; that has guides, maps and coupons They are also some coipons given away around town- one little one is called Beach Bucks and is given out in racks near tourist areas.

You will probably also see some in racks in your hotel lobby.

You would have to be staying quite a while to make buying an Entertainment Book ( which you pay for) that has 2/1 coupons worth while.

The site www.restaurant.com sells discounted ';gift certificates'; for restaurants and while I learned of it in the Las Vegas Forum it has Ft. Lauderdale Restaurants too- but for me, none of the ones they have are any I would really patronize- but you could check and see- for instance you can get $25 certificate for $10. They do , however have restrictions and minimums.

I also look for the free City Links and HIgh Times weekly tabloids ( there are others you will see too)- as they frequently have 2/1 coupons or ads about early bird specials.

There is a 2/1 coupon for Carrie B in City Links as well as in theFriday Sun Sentinel Sunshine (entertainment) Section each week.

    Does anyone remember...

A boat ride tour carried out by an old gentleman who I heard about through Virgin about 10 years ago?

He used to take us out on a boat north of Orlando near Cypress springs going through the waterways and pointing out all the wildlife; Turtles, crocs, monkeys etc and he would stop off so everyone could get in the water for a swim! I also remember we used to stop off at this dodgy cabin to pick up some packed lunches! It was a great day and I was wondering if anyone remembers it and whether it%26#39;s still running?

    Does anyone remember...

I did a very similar excursion but it was in Silver Spings not Cypress.

The wooden cabin for lunch oh yes I remember that well

a sandwich and cookie in a brown paperbag with grease on the bottom if I remember right. I ate it though and lived to tell the tale

I believe that is still running.

    Does anyone remember...

Silver springs that was it! It was a long time ago! haha! I remember some sort of warm meat with ketchup in a sandwich! haha!

Any idea what they%26#39;re called? (Not the sandwich, the tour ;o)

    Thanks

Are you talking about the glass bottom boats trips?

I just cant remember what they were called

I have checked the Virgin website but it seems they dont do it any more. I think you will have to search it out independently

No its not the glass bottom boat ride, it takes you across some

big lakes where you stop to pick up your gourmet lunch ;0) then through the mangroves to the crystal clear waters

you can jump off and have a swim and on the way back it goes through a really big lock which is some experience.

There is a business opportunity if ever I saw one.

Your market is in place and your clients gagging for a retro experience - and the spam sandwiches.

    VOILA

I think you may be thinking of Paradise Park, but they have been closed for many years.

Oh that%26#39;s a shame! The last time I went he said business was so good they had brought 2 more boats for the tour. Maybe he retired or something and it couldn%26#39;t carry on.

Oh well, maybe I%26#39;ll just hire a boat and do it myself! ;o)

Its a shame it not running anymore the more I thought about it

the more I decided to book it again for Sept. It was such a laugh (honest)

Vegas, in these times of sterilising everything and litiagation worries I really miss those experiances it, you have to go way off the beaten track for retro these days.

    Convertible in May ?

    Hi,

first visit to Orlando, the first two weeks of May with my girlfriend We are staying in a villa just outside Davenport. Want to hire either a convertible or a luxury car but my girlfriend has a few reservations about a convertible...

    a) will it be too warm to have the top down during the day?

    b) will it be too windy with the top down and mess up her hair :) ?

    c) will we end up sat in traffic most of the time just breathing in fumes ?

    d) will we be bombarded by insects with the top down ?

My argument is that we don%26#39;t get the weather in the UK and lets live a little while in Orlando..

    Points of view please.

    Convertible in May ?

Live a little. We hired a Sebring one year in summer but you have to take into account the conditions. It%26#39;s not just a question of temperature but of sun - you can burn yourself, and especially the tops of your legs if you spend too much time with the top down. Regarding messing up hair, no-one cares out there. If you are dressing up and going out to an expensive restaurant, have the top up. There is traffic but have never noticed fumes. No real problem with insects although watch out if driving with the top down in the evening.

You are right - we don%26#39;t get that weather in the UK so enjoy it!

    Convertible in May ?

    OK, i guess:

    a) YES, you will n o t open the roof, I guess! Unless you are v e r y hard!!! :-))) (I had a convertible and opened the roof late in the evening i f so!)

    b) No problem!! Have a convertible at home and l o v e wind around me... (maybe it w i l l mess up her hair but I won麓t tell her! :-))

    c) I don麓t think so!!! Have been there so many times...

yes, there c a n be traffic jam but IMHO i have to say that this is n o t so bad!!

    d) No, therefore you麓ll have a shield of glass :-)))

Your argument is fine... Try it and the next time you k n o w if this is for you or not... Take the luxury next time and l i v e :-))

    I love florida with a n y car :-))

What do you do if a bird poops in your car...........

Dont take her out again lol

Yes is the answer to the hair question. Otherwise go for it. If it were July I%26#39;d hesitate but in May you will be ridin%26#39; top down all the time..

May is the perfect time for a converitble. If you think it will rain, stop and put the top up.

When my hair was long I wore a bandana to keep it from flying in my face while I was driving (really I went to Good Will and got the old fashioned nylon kinds of kerchiefs and my friends used to love wearing them, they would play %26#39;thelma and louise%26#39; or %26#39;go-go%26#39;s%26#39; or %26#39;grease%26#39; and we would fight over who got what color ...LOL..good memories!)

    have fun!

    Lisa

Just watch out for the ';love bugs'; which come out in May too. They are a real nuisance and might be a problem with a convertible car.

    They seem to get everywhere.

';Love bugs'; ? Are they the VW Beetle variety ? Cause I love them cars... in the process of buying my second one :)

Or are you actually talking about genuine biting nasty flying things ?

Love Bugs don%26#39;t bite humans at all, but they are nasty flying insects which, when splattered all over the front of your vehicle, take the literal paint right off.

Love Bugs are a yearly nuisance in Florida and other Gulf coast states in the months of May and September. They don%26#39;t ';harm'; anything other than vehicle paint jobs.

Cheers Kat, convertible is still on the cards then......

Hey Andy, Dollar, use kiss promo, $249 per wk. Sebring.

  • Beach Chair Rentals?

Hi. My husband and I are only spending one night in Ft. Lauderdale before heading down to Key Biscayne. We%26#39;re looking for a hotel that%26#39;s on the beach that we can hang out at for one night and one day while we wait for our other friends to fly in. We were looking at Pelican, Hilton, or Marriott Harbor Beach. They are all pretty expensive but I was wondering if you have to rent beach chairs at any of those places? I don%26#39;t want to have to spend $300+ and then have to rent towels and beach chairs. Any advice? Or if you have any suggestions at any other beach too? Thanks!

    Beach Chair Rentals?

I know that the Pelican and the Marriott Harbor beach don%26#39;t charge for beach towels and chairs . I can%26#39;t imagine that the Hilton would either.

All three are very nice hotels.

    Have a wonderful trip.

    Beach Chair Rentals?

If you resent added on charges, you may want to know that while all these hotels charge for parking , a recent poster was upset at the charge at the Hiltion , $27/day. I don%26#39;t keep up with all the parking costs at hotels, but I had though the others were in the mid teens at most ( maybe my info is old).

At any rate, keep that in mind. In addition, the Hilton is across the street from the beach ,while the other two are directly ';on the sand.'; Don%26#39;t know if that matters to you.

Hilton is a very new property , so there are only a few reviews. The latest ones seem better than the early ones- perhaps they were going through a%26#39;Shakeoown '; period right after opening. I don%26#39;t know their policies on beach chairs, but it may be addressed in the reviews somewhere:

    tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g34227-d619451-鈥?/a>

Thanks for the advice! We won%26#39;t have a car, so we don%26#39;t need to worry about parking.
